SUMMARY:People’s Public Hearing on Roadless Rule Repeal
DESCRIPTION:There is currently a USDA policy proposal to rescind the 2001 Roadless Rule and open 58.5 millions of acres of public lands to new access roads and logging. Opponents claim it will fragment wildlife habitat\, among other environmental concerns and increase human induced wildfires. America’s national forests and grasslands comprise diverse ecosystems\, historic landscapes and public values. They provide a broad array of public benefits that include clean water\, wood products\, sustenance and outdoor experiences. More info at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/managing-land/planning/roadless \nCome learn about the proposal and\, if you choose\, make a public comment. The event will be organized by MountainTrue\, a non-partisan environmental nonprofit based in Asheville and serving 28 counties across the southern Blue Ridge.

SUMMARY:"Without Shade\, Without Rest" Film Screening\, Meal\, and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:For Season of Creation 2026\, St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville is screening the documentary\, “Without Shade\, Without Rest\,” highlighting the hazards of farm and nursery workers\, who labor in sweltering heat without heat/water/nutrition breaks\, since OSHA still has no regulations about outdoor worker safety.\n\nFood trucks will serve meals\, and a panel discussion will follow the 40-minute film describing the farmworker experience in Henderson County.\n\nThe film features a grassroots group of farmworkers in the 1990’s – now the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) who united to protect their fellow workers\, after getting no heat safety accommodations from their employers.

SUMMARY:MountainTrue & NECHAMA Reverse Tashlich river clean-up & celebration near Asheville\, NC 9/28
DESCRIPTION:Join Jewish disaster relief organization\, NECHAMA\, and MountainTrue for a river clean-up and celebration of Reverse Tashlich. Reverse Tashlich\, an initiative by Repair the Sea\, invites communities to take hands-on\, meaningful action during the High Holidays by cleaning up our waterways. Clean-up will focus on Hurricane Helene Debris and will be land-based. \nParticipants can expect to learn about NECHAMA and take part in a short ritual to honor Reverse Tashlich during the clean-up. \nDuring Tashlich on Rosh HaShanah\, the Jewish New Year\, followers symbolically cast “sins” into water. In Reverse Tashlich\, that ritual is turned into action by removing human “sin” from the water – cleaning up local waterways and starting the year with purpose and care. \nCan’t help with the clean-up? Just come for the party! Join us for a more extensive celebration after the clean-up in Asheville\, NC from 2:30 to 4 pm. Exact location to be announced. \nLOCATION: The exact location will be communicated closer to the cleanup and is dependent on the Army Corps of Engineers. We expect to be close to the Asheville\, NC area. \nPlease wear closed-toe shoes and bring drinking water\, snacks\, weather-appropriate attire\, and a change of clothes for afterward in case you get wet or dirty. We will have plenty of trash bags\, gloves\, safety glasses\, and buckets for use\, along with some hand tools such as shovels\, loppers\, hand saws\, rakes\, etc.\, however\, feel free to bring your own if you would like. We will have our dump trailer there for the removal of collected garbage and recyclables. \nTo thank you for your time\, volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. Please email members@mountaintrue.org to request yours. \nNECHAMA\, rooted in the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam\, repairing the world\, is the sole national Jewish organization dedicated to disaster relief and have been in the region helping out since Hurricane Helene. \nSign up for the clean-up \nRSVP for the post-celebration

SUMMARY:2025 CCA Summit: Faith-Based Organizing & Theological Action in the Wake of Helene near Asheville\, NC-POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene\, our faith communities showed up in powerful and beautiful ways — providing comfort\, aid\, and support during a time of immense need. As we look ahead to healing and long-term resilience\, we know that organizing and collective action are essential to building a stronger\, more sustainable future for our region. \nThat’s why we had planned to transform our annual Creation Care Alliance Summit into a Faith and Organizing Summit led by Dr. Timothy Conder and Dr. Dan Rhodes of the Black Mountain School of Theology and Community. \nWhile we remain deeply excited about this training\, we have decided to postpone the event as we continue the process of hiring two key staff members: an Organizing Director for MountainTrue and an Organizer for the Creation Care Alliance. We believe these roles are essential to fully supporting our covenant partners and making this training as impactful and meaningful as possible. \nWe now aim to offer the summit in Winter 2025/2026 and look forward to building something deep and lasting together. (If you want to receive an email notification when the new Summit date has been confirmed\, please click here.) \nIf you purchased a ticket\, you may choose to: Receive a full refund or have your ticket fee converted to a tax-deductible donation. Please reply to sydney@mountaintrue.org with your preference. \nIf you or someone you know is interested in helping build a more just\, sustainable\, and connected region\, please consider applying or sharing the open positions linked below:\n 👉 View Open Positions at MountainTrue\n 📬 Questions? Reach out at amy@mountaintrue.org \nThank you for your understanding\, your support\, and your commitment to this work.

SUMMARY:5-week series on reducing our emissions
DESCRIPTION:Are my concerns about climate change reflected in my actions?\nThe largest factor causing our climate to change is our collective emissions of greenhouse gases. We can accept responsibility for the actions in our control: our actions that cause emissions. The 5 weekly discussions will provide both an understanding of your emissions and how to take action and reduce your emissions. We will discuss: \n-How much greenhouse gas do our personal decisions cause?\n-How can we make different choices to reduce our emissions?\n-Why should we focus on our own personal emissions when the problem is our collective emissions? \nWhen we act\, we live by our faith & values\, we lead\, we set an example\, we give ourselves stronger footing for advocacy positions we take\, we signal corporations what products we will purchase\, and we reduce emissions. Don’t default to relying on corporations and/or our government to make the best moral judgment for how we live our lives. \nJim Tolbert will give you the information you need to act in alignment with your concern about climate change. After a 28-year career managing environmental cleanups\, Jim spent a decade advocating for sound climate action as a volunteer and staff at Citizens’ Climate Lobby\, a board member for a bipartisan climate PAC\, and a member of the Blue Horizons’ Community Council in Asheville. \nDATES: Thursdays at 7:00 PM: March 13\, 20\, 27\, and April 3\, 10 at Skyland United Methodist Church\, 1984 Hendersonville Road\, Asheville\, NC 28803
