SUMMARY:MountainTrue & NECHAMA Reverse Tashlich river clean-up & celebration near Asheville\, NC 9/28
DESCRIPTION:Join Jewish disaster relief organization\, NECHAMA\, and MountainTrue for a river clean-up and celebration of Reverse Tashlich. Reverse Tashlich\, an initiative by Repair the Sea\, invites communities to take hands-on\, meaningful action during the High Holidays by cleaning up our waterways. Clean-up will focus on Hurricane Helene Debris and will be land-based. \nParticipants can expect to learn about NECHAMA and take part in a short ritual to honor Reverse Tashlich during the clean-up. \nDuring Tashlich on Rosh HaShanah\, the Jewish New Year\, followers symbolically cast “sins” into water. In Reverse Tashlich\, that ritual is turned into action by removing human “sin” from the water – cleaning up local waterways and starting the year with purpose and care. \nCan’t help with the clean-up? Just come for the party! Join us for a more extensive celebration after the clean-up in Asheville\, NC from 2:30 to 4 pm. Exact location to be announced. \nLOCATION: The exact location will be communicated closer to the cleanup and is dependent on the Army Corps of Engineers. We expect to be close to the Asheville\, NC area. \nPlease wear closed-toe shoes and bring drinking water\, snacks\, weather-appropriate attire\, and a change of clothes for afterward in case you get wet or dirty. We will have plenty of trash bags\, gloves\, safety glasses\, and buckets for use\, along with some hand tools such as shovels\, loppers\, hand saws\, rakes\, etc.\, however\, feel free to bring your own if you would like. We will have our dump trailer there for the removal of collected garbage and recyclables. \nTo thank you for your time\, volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. Please email members@mountaintrue.org to request yours. \nNECHAMA\, rooted in the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam\, repairing the world\, is the sole national Jewish organization dedicated to disaster relief and have been in the region helping out since Hurricane Helene. \nSign up for the clean-up \nRSVP for the post-celebration

SUMMARY:2025 CCA Summit: Faith-Based Organizing & Theological Action in the Wake of Helene near Asheville\, NC-POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene\, our faith communities showed up in powerful and beautiful ways — providing comfort\, aid\, and support during a time of immense need. As we look ahead to healing and long-term resilience\, we know that organizing and collective action are essential to building a stronger\, more sustainable future for our region. \nThat’s why we had planned to transform our annual Creation Care Alliance Summit into a Faith and Organizing Summit led by Dr. Timothy Conder and Dr. Dan Rhodes of the Black Mountain School of Theology and Community. \nWhile we remain deeply excited about this training\, we have decided to postpone the event as we continue the process of hiring two key staff members: an Organizing Director for MountainTrue and an Organizer for the Creation Care Alliance. We believe these roles are essential to fully supporting our covenant partners and making this training as impactful and meaningful as possible. \nWe now aim to offer the summit in Winter 2025/2026 and look forward to building something deep and lasting together. (If you want to receive an email notification when the new Summit date has been confirmed\, please click here.) \nIf you purchased a ticket\, you may choose to: Receive a full refund or have your ticket fee converted to a tax-deductible donation. Please reply to sydney@mountaintrue.org with your preference. \nIf you or someone you know is interested in helping build a more just\, sustainable\, and connected region\, please consider applying or sharing the open positions linked below:\n 👉 View Open Positions at MountainTrue\n 📬 Questions? Reach out at amy@mountaintrue.org \nThank you for your understanding\, your support\, and your commitment to this work.

SUMMARY:5-week series on reducing our emissions
DESCRIPTION:Are my concerns about climate change reflected in my actions?\nThe largest factor causing our climate to change is our collective emissions of greenhouse gases. We can accept responsibility for the actions in our control: our actions that cause emissions. The 5 weekly discussions will provide both an understanding of your emissions and how to take action and reduce your emissions. We will discuss: \n-How much greenhouse gas do our personal decisions cause?\n-How can we make different choices to reduce our emissions?\n-Why should we focus on our own personal emissions when the problem is our collective emissions? \nWhen we act\, we live by our faith & values\, we lead\, we set an example\, we give ourselves stronger footing for advocacy positions we take\, we signal corporations what products we will purchase\, and we reduce emissions. Don’t default to relying on corporations and/or our government to make the best moral judgment for how we live our lives. \nJim Tolbert will give you the information you need to act in alignment with your concern about climate change. After a 28-year career managing environmental cleanups\, Jim spent a decade advocating for sound climate action as a volunteer and staff at Citizens’ Climate Lobby\, a board member for a bipartisan climate PAC\, and a member of the Blue Horizons’ Community Council in Asheville. \nDATES: Thursdays at 7:00 PM: March 13\, 20\, 27\, and April 3\, 10 at Skyland United Methodist Church\, 1984 Hendersonville Road\, Asheville\, NC 28803

SUMMARY:Snorkel the French Broad River’s Headwaters in Rosman\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Join MountainTrue staff and partners for a guided snorkeling experience on the French Broad River’s headwaters at Champion Park in Rosman\, NC. Come immerse yourself amongst the vibrant and diverse aquatic life calling the cold\, clear\, waters of the upper French Broad home. Our guides will be Luke Etchison – Western Region Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Coordinator with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Kevin Merrill – Owner & Biologist with Oxbow River Snorkeling. \nLuke and Kevin have intimate knowledge of the fish\, reptiles\, amphibians\, and invertebrates on this particular site and within Western North Carolina in general. You’ll learn about what you’re seeing\, the conservation and preservation efforts occurring to help protect these species and their habitats\, and other regional water quality and outdoor recreation projects happening throughout the watershed. \nMasks\, snorkels\, wetsuits\, and booties can be rented through our partnership with Mountains to Seas. If you rent equipment\, please make sure to complete ALL of the sizing fields for each ticketed guest to ensure we get the correct size for wetsuits and booties. \nDue to the sensitivity of the site and the capacity of our guides\, we will be limiting this adventure to two separate two-hour time slots with no more than ten people each. \nThe first tour starts at 10:00 AM and the second tour at 12:00 PM. \nPlease Note that snorkeling tours like this one are at the mercy of Mother Nature. High water velocity and poor visibility following a heavy rain event may create conditions unfavorable for this activity to continue as planned. If this occurs for our scheduled date\, we will unfortunately need to cancel and refund any expenses. \nRegister:\n**If the ticket type or timeslot that you need are not available please contact amy@mountaintrue.org for assistance or to be put on the waitlist. Registration will close on June 14th. \nRegister for the 10am tour\nRegister for the 12pm tour

SUMMARY:Headwaters Outfitters’ Annual Upper French Broad River Clean-Up Day in Rosman\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Join French Broad Paddle Trail Manager\, Jack Henderson\, as he participates in Headwaters Outfitters’ Annual Upper French Broad River Clean-up Day. \nThis is not a MountainTrue-hosted event. Headwaters Outfitters supports MountainTrue\, and we would love to help them in return. \nEvent info:\nThe French Broad River Clean-Up remains the best volunteer gig in town! Since the inception of “The Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day” in 1992\, the annual river clean-up has netted more than 3\,500 garbage bags\, 4\,500 old tires\, and roughly 15 additional tons of trash along the upper French Broad. Over 3\,000 volunteers have participated in the event\, many returning year after year. \nVolunteers show up at Headwaters Outfitters at 9:00 am. Everyone will be assigned Headwaters Outfitters canoes (2 people max per canoe\, no kayaks please)\, paddles\, life jackets\, and garbage bags. Participants should bring sturdy gloves\, river shoes\, and tools such as trash grabbers or long-handled barbecue tongs to grab trash with. It’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothing for afterwards! After a light complimentary sponsored breakfast\, volunteers will hit the river to collect as much trash as they can. Volunteers need to have solid paddling skills\, be team players\, and be ready to get dirty and work hard. Headwaters Outfitters will provide transportation to and from the river for the start and end of the day. Once back at the shop\, a sponsored lunch will be provided thanks to generous donations from community members and businesses. \nAll volunteers must pre-register via Eventbrite to secure your spot. Space is limited. \nContact Danielle for more information or questions regarding this event at danielle@headwatersoutfitters.com

DESCRIPTION:Join MountainTrue’s Green Riverkeeper and Liquidlogic Co-founder Shane Benedict for the 14th Annual Green River Spring Cleaning! \nWe’ll meet at the Fishtop Access at 10:00 AM on Saturday\, May 4th where we will divide into teams and then get on the river to pull out as much litter as possible before the summer paddling season. We need paddlers of all skill levels to tackle each section of the Green from the Upper Green below the Tuxedo hydroelectric station\, through the Narrows\, down the Lower Green\, and to Lake Adger. \n*Roadside clean-up is also an option for folks who do not want to get on the water! \nBring your: boat\, paddling gear (including life jacket)\, snacks/lunch\, water\, sunscreen\, any necessary medical supplies you may need\, and be prepared to get dirty and wet. \nThis is not a guided adventure but a volunteer clean-up event. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by a parent/guardian for the entire duration of the clean-up. \nMountainTrue has a limited number of duckies and gear if needed\, but you must register in advance. \nStick around for the after party in downtown Saluda at the Spring Green Bash with Green River Adventures!
