SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Single-Use Plastics with MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn what MountainTrue has been doing to address single-use plastics and how you can help? Join us for a lunch and learn\, hosted by MountainTrue and Green Sage Cafe. \nWe see them all over the road\, clogging storm drains\, and in the river\, but plastics are more than just a trash issue. Single-use plastics are items of convenience\, most of which are unrecyclable\, that we may use for a few minutes before throwing them out. These disposable items wreak havoc on the environment but also pose serious threats to our health\, our landfills\, and the most vulnerable populations among us.

SUMMARY:Common Ground Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Jackson county folks! Don’t miss this film being offered TWICE in your community thanks to our newest covenant partner congregation\, Cullowhee United Methodist Church! \nThe first showing will be at 3:00 pm on April 13th in the Community Room on the Jackson County Public Library. The second showing will be at Cullowhee United Methodist Church at 7:00 pm on April 22nd. We hope you’ll attend one of these events to learn about ways to invest in the health of our food system and meet others in your community invested in caring for creation. \nAbout the film: Common Ground is the highly anticipated sequel to the juggernaut success documentary\, Kiss the Ground\, which touched over 1 billion people globally and inspired the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to put $20 billion toward soil health. By fusing journalistic expose’ with deeply personal stories from those on the front lines of the food movement\, Common Ground exposes the powers at play damaging our food system and the farmers who feed us while introducing us to a hopeful movement made up of white\, black\, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate\, save our health\, and stabilize America’s economy – before it’s too late.

SUMMARY:Missing Middle Housing: What is it and why do we need it?
DESCRIPTION:Wait – so you’re saying that you did NOT read the 150+ page report that came out just before the holidays? We feel you. And this event is for you. We want everyone to understand what is meant by the term middle housing – because it may not be what you expect. We also want to talk about why it would be a good thing for our community if we could get more of it. \nHomes like duplexes\, triplexes\, granny flats\, and townhomes are considered middle housing. Often called “missing middle housing”\, these types of homes used to be common across Asheville and cities throughout the United States. However\, due to the adoption and rise of exclusionary zoning policies designed to keep people of color and renters out\, these home types – which are more naturally affordable – were banned from our communities. Today\, our communities still feel the legacy of these exclusionary zoning rules\, and most of the homes we build today are larger and more expensive as a result. \nThis event will include speakers representing different interests in our community – from environmentalists to housing advocates to older adults – addressing specifically what middle housing means for them. We’ll have plenty of visuals so you can see examples of middle housing types and maybe even see some homes you recognize. You’ll have opportunities to ask questions and also share with us your thoughts. Admission is free\, we ask that you RSVP so that we can ensure we have space and seating for everyone. \nWe hope to see you there! \nThis event is Co-hosted by: MountainTrue and Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC\, AARP NC Mountain Region\, Asheville City Association of Educators\, Asheville for All\, Asheville Food and Beverage United\, Asheville on Bikes\, Buncombe County Association of Educators\, Just Economics\, Mountain Housing Opportunities\, Pisgah Legal Services\, and Thrive Asheville.

SUMMARY:Hendersonville Green Drinks: Drought\, Climate Change and the Mystery of the Missing Western Water
DESCRIPTION:Hear WNC Native and Rocky Mountain Biological Lab Research Scientist Ian Breckheimer discuss how a team of environmental scientists are revolutionizing our understanding of water in the West and helping us adapt to climate change. \nThe Colorado River is the lifeblood of the American Southwest\, and the river’s 40 million human users are struggling to adapt to a severe drought made worse by climate change. The vast majority of the river’s flow comes from winter snowpack in the Rocky Mountains\, and in recent years scientists and water managers have become extremely good at measuring how much water is in the snowpack in early spring. Ideally\, we could use this information to forecast how much water will be available for human use in the river the following summer\, helping us better conserve this scarce resource. Unfortunately\, water forecasting on the Colorado is has been held back by a large and unpredictable amount of snow water (up to 25% of the river’s annual flow) that seems to disappear between the snowpack and the river. Solving the mystery of this “missing” water has brought together a diverse group of hydrologists\, ecologists\, and atmospheric scientists at a remote field station in Colorado. This talk will gather and synthesize exciting new results from their pioneering work\, showing how environmental researchers can play a critical role in helping us adapt to accelerating climate change. \n5:30 p.m.: Grab a drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new! \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event\, and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco\, and non-alcoholic beverages. A limited food menu will be available.

SUMMARY:Green Drinks in Hendersonville\, NC 2/8: Ecusta Trail Update and Plans for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about the latest developments on planning and construction of the Ecusta Trail\, as well as potential trail enhancements and connections that could occur in the future. Initial construction of the Ecusta Trail will be bare bones\, but there is the potential for many types of amenities that will vastly improve the user experience and involve community collaboration. During this presentation\, Mark Tooley (president of The Friends of Ecusta Trail) will discuss some of the ideas that are being discussed for the future development of the trail. Studies have found that the more connectivity a trail has to other trails and popular destinations\, the more useful and desirable it becomes. Mark will share information about how the Ecusta Trail connects with existing trails or those being planned in the region which will help provide connectivity for an enhanced user experience. \nThe Friends of Ecusta Trail (FOET) has been in existence for nearly 15 years as an advocacy organization to create a rail trail on the unused rail line between Hendersonville and Brevard. FOET has worked with local governments\, private businesses\, non-governmental organizations\, and non-profits to gain community support for the trail during that time. After Ecusta Rails2Trail LLC. (a subsidiary of Conserving Carolina) purchased the rail line in 2021\, FOET has worked with Conserving Carolina to raise private funds to provide required local matching funds for the federal grants that have been received. Those grants that have been awarded\, totaling nearly $46 million\, will be used to build the entirety of the Ecusta Trail in the next several years. \nMark is a past board member of Conserving Carolina and has been a board member of FOET for nearly 10 years. He has been FOET’s president for the past two years and resides in Transylvania County. \n5:30 p.m.: Grab a drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new! \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue\, and Trailside Brewing Co.

SUMMARY:The Smell of Money Screening Presented by MountainTrue and Asheville Animal Rights Collective (AARC) in Asheville\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Join MountainTrue and Asheville Animal Rights Collective (AARC) for a screening of The Smell of Money at the Grail Moviehouse in Asheville\, North Carolina. Stick around for a panel discussion after the viewing including panelists from both host organizations. \n“The smell of money”—that’s what Big Pork calls the stench of pig waste in the air in eastern North Carolina\, where much of the world’s bacon and barbecue is made. But to Elsie Herring and others who live near the state’s giant pig factories\, the revolting odor is a call to battle against generations of injustice. When a corporate hog farm moves in––uninvited––on land her grandfather had purchased after claiming his freedom from slavery\, Elsie Herring decides to fight back. But as her rural community becomes the epicenter of the pork industry’s explosion in America\, Elsie’s struggle to save her family’s home and heritage turns into a battle against one of the world’s most powerful companies and its deadly pollution. \nAfter decades of intimidation and defeat\, Elsie and her community team up with a gutsy small- town lawyer to take the world’s largest pork company to court. An epic\, nine-year legal battle ensues\, and the residents risk everything to reclaim their rights to clean air\, pure water\, and a life free from the stench of shit. \nA story about the power of love for one’s family and community to triumph over even the largest forces of injustice\, The Smell of Money calls upon viewers to see the people behind what’s on our plates––and to join the fight for a better future for us all. \nWatch the Trailer\n \nPurchase Tickets (only 50 seats available so don’t wait\, get your ticket now!) \nDoors Open at 6pm\, Show starts at 6:30 pm. \nA portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit the work of MountainTrue and Asheville Animal Rights Collective (AARC).  \nPanelists for the event include: \n\nBo Hess\, MSW\, LCSW\, LCAS social worker\, therapist\, social justice and animal rights advocate\, and current candidate for Asheville City Council. Bo is originally from Goldsboro\,  where numerous factory farms and meatpacking plants are located\, less than an hour from where “The Smell of Money” was filmed. When he was a kid\, a hurricane came through and polluted the area with pigs’ waste\, and it was one of the defining moments in his life that woke him up to a vegan\, plant-based lifestyle.\n\n\nCalen Otto is a queer\, anti-speciesist activist and co-organizer of AARC. They formerly lived on the East coast of North Carolina and would frequently visit Duplin County\, where “The Smell of Money” was filmed\, to document the conditions of pigs in holding pens and on their way to the slaughterhouse\, as well as the environmental impacts. When Hurricane Florence hit Calen helped rescue 50+ animals from the floods and some of their footage was included in the documentary.\n\nErica Shanks\, MountainTrue’s Green Riverkeeper\, has worked for the past ten years in the agricultural field supporting new and beginning farmers\, managing farmer’s markets\, running her own small farm business\, and advocating for the protection of farmland for future beginning farmers. She traveled to Patagonia\, Chile to volunteer with Conservacion Patagonica to learn about farming practices with a heavy focus on protecting ecosystems and regenerating the land while growing food.
