The largest factor causing our climate to change is our collective emissions of greenhouse gases. We can accept responsibility for the actions in our control: our actions that cause emissions. The 5 weekly discussions will provide both an understanding of your emissions and how to take action and reduce your emissions. We will discuss:

-How much greenhouse gas do our personal decisions cause?
-How can we make different choices to reduce our emissions?
-Why should we focus on our own personal emissions when the problem is our collective emissions?

When we act, we live by our faith & values, we lead, we set an example, we give ourselves stronger footing for advocacy positions we take, we signal corporations what products we will purchase, and we reduce emissions. Don’t default to relying on corporations and/or our government to make the best moral judgment for how we live our lives.

Jim Tolbert will give you the information you need to act in alignment with your concern about climate change. After a 28-year career managing environmental cleanups, Jim spent a decade advocating for sound climate action as a volunteer and staff at Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a board member for a bipartisan climate PAC, and a member of the Blue Horizons’ Community Council in Asheville.

DATES: Thursdays at 7:00 PM: March 13, 20, 27, and April 3, 10 at Skyland United Methodist Church, 1984 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803

Invest in renewables, foster resilience, and work toward energy justice https://creationcarealliance.org/deepening-roots-renewables-resilience-energy-justice/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 15:45:04 +0000 https://creationcarealliance.org/?p=2446 Suggested Practices and Examples for Implementation:
  • Install solar panels (if solar makes sense for your building/property location).
  • Solar doesn’t work for your building? Look into a geothermal heating and cooling pump.
  • Volunteer in your community to help others weatherize, access renewable energy, and receive the support they need. Make it a regular part of your creation care ministry.
  • Install electric car charging stations in your parking lot.
  • Organize your congregation to encourage your city/town to go solar, install electric car charging stations, etc.
  • Learn about energy democracy and how your congregation can advocate for energy justice in your community.  Do that advocacy and organizing work.

Invest in LEDs, energy efficiency measures and electrification https://creationcarealliance.org/nurturing-growth-leds-efficiency-electrification/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 15:42:31 +0000 https://creationcarealliance.org/?p=2444 Suggested Practices and Examples for Implementation:
  • Complete an energy audit.
    • Find an energy audit template online or bring in an outside expert to conduct the audit for you.
  • Begin making changes based on the audit results, such as:
    • Replacing incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs, which are 80% more efficient
    • Replacing old and inefficient appliances with ENERGY STAR products
    • Installing “smart” programmable thermostats
    • Insulating water heaters
    • Ensuring attics are well-insulated
    • Upgrade to an ENERGY STAR air conditioning system
    • Replace old, drafty windows with energy-saving options
  • Replace gas appliances with electric options
    • Moving away from fossil fuel reliance is a vital step toward truly addressing energy issues.
  • Make contact with a local solar company and have your building/property inspected for solar viability.
    • Is solar a good option? Solar leasing? What do they think?
  • Advocate for a “greener grid.” A green grid is when electrification efforts will really pay off!

Conserve energy use in your facilities with these easy, low-cost steps https://creationcarealliance.org/planting-seeds-energy-conservation/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 15:40:51 +0000 https://creationcarealliance.org/?p=2441 Suggested Practices and Examples for Implementation:
  • Post signs above light switches asking folks to conserve energy by turning off lights when not in the room, etc.
  • Set thermostats to energy-saving temperatures, especially when no one is in the building (evenings, specific days)
    • This doesn’t have to be drastic to make a difference. Lower by just a few degrees in colder months and higher by just a few degrees in warmer months.
  • Use power strips and turn off computers, copy machines, and other office equipment when not in use
  • Set water heaters to the lowest practical temperature
  • Collect and look at utility bills for the past 12 months
    • This is one step to completing an energy audit. Knowing how much energy you use is essential to using less.
